Barbara Greenspun remembers 1972: Test Site blasts were cause for concern
Friday, Dec. 8, 2000 | 9:56 a.m.
In reading Hank's column of Oct. 8, 1972, I certainly recall the years when we were very concerned about the atomic testing at the Nevada Test Site, and the shaking and rumbling that went on. At the time we feared that Russia, China or some other country might bring disaster to the world by exploding their own atomic bomb. We feared other nations when in truth we citizens of Nevada should have feared our own government -- the United States -- because now it is threatening to place all this waste in our back yards.
In is apparent to all who have so vigorously protested making Yucca Mountain the nation's high level nuclear storage waste repository, that the Department of Energy has targeted Nevada from the beginning.
I wonder what Hank would have written when he saw the headline that appeared in the Dec. 1 issue of the Sun, "DOE wants Yucca."
