Male Athlete of the Week: KEITH RICHARDSON
School: Cheyenne
Class: Junior
Sport: Basketball
Last week: Richardson, the Desert Shields' starting shooting guard, helped the team to a perfect 4-0 week to open the season. After starting with a seven-point effort in a 67-64 double-overtime win over Las Vegas, the 5-10 junior scored 21 points in a 79-63 triumph over Chaparral on Wednesday, poured in 32 points in a 74-71 victory over Bonanza on Friday and contributed 20 points in a 75-45 blowout of Hug on Saturday. "He's a mentally tough kid," Cheyenne coach Larry Johnson said. "He came in and hit his open shots. I can't say enough about him."
Female Athlete of the Week: LYNDSAY GENSLER
School: Bonanza
Class: Sophomore
Sport: Basketball
Last week: The Bengals' starting point guard lifted her squad to a 4-1 opening week, scoring in double figures in all five games. Gensler started things off with a 15-point effort against Basic, then scored 18 points in a win over Eldorado. The 6-0 sophomore then helped Bonanza reach the final of Galena's Mountain Classic Tournament, pouring in 53 points in three games and earning a spot on the all-tourney team. She also finished the week with 68 rebounds, 30 assists, 18 steals and 14 blocks. "She's running the show for us," said Bengals coach Cathy Szymarek.
