NFR Notebook: Beaver makes move toward claiming All-Around crown

Joe Beaver continued his quest for a third world champion All-Around Cowboy title by winning $9,108 during Wednesday night's National Finals Rodeo and moving into second place in the all-around standings.

Beaver did not cash in the team roping event, but tied for second in calf roping to push his NFR earnings to $59,736.05 and his total season winnings to $61,776.52. He trails Scott Johnston by $22,285.20 going into tonight's seventh go-round at the Thomas & Mack.

Reigning All-Around champion Fred Whitfield tied with Beaver for second place in the calf roping go-round and moved from fifth to third in the all-around world standings. Whitfield, the defending calf roping world champion, leads the world standings in that event after six go-rounds.

Calf roper Trevor Brazile did not cash Wednesday and slipped from second to fourth in the all-around; J.D. Crouse went from fourth to fifth and Blair Burk slipped from sixth to eighth.

Wednesday night's go-round winners:

Mark Garrett scored an 88 and won his first bareback riding go-round of this NFR. Defending world champion Lan Lajeunesse was second with an 84 and Jeff Collins took third with an 83 and retained his lead in both the NFR average and the world standings.

Todd Suhn won the steer wrestling go-round with a time of 3.80 seconds and moved from seventh to fifth in the world standings. Trav Cadwell was second with a time of 3.90 and Sid Steiner took third in 4 seconds flat.

Reigning world champions Speed Williams and Rich Skleton won the team roping go-round with a time of 4.80. Bobby Hurley and Tyler Magnus were second in 5.1 while average leaders Daniel Green and Allen Bach tied for third with Chance Kelton and Monty Petska in 5.30 seconds.

Dan Mortenson scored an 85 and won his first saddle bronc go-round of the NFR. There was a four-way tied for second place between world standings leader Scott Johnston, average leader Ryan Mapston, Glen O'Neill and Tom Reeves.

Clay Cerny won his second calf roping go-round with a time of 7.70 seconds. Defending world champ Fred Whitfield and Joe Beaver tied for second with identical times of 8 seconds.

Whitfield's second-place effort allowed the reigning all-around cowboy to increase his lead in the calf roping world standings to $14,990 over Blair Burk, who did not cash Wednesday.

Kagan Sirett of Pincher Creek, Alberta, won his first bull riding go-round with a score of 86 on a bull called Moonshine. Robey Condra took second with an 85 on Diamond Cutter and took over the lead in the world standings. Lee Akin was third with an 84 on Party Hound.

Kelly Yates won her second barrel racing go-round with a time of 13.78 seconds. Kristie Peterson was second in 13.87 and Charmayne James was third in 13.91 and remained atop the world standings.

John Brogan won his second straight go-round in the third night of the Wrangler Bullfight Tour Finals with a score of 89. Mike Matt was second with an 86 and Greg Rumohr was third with an 83.

INJURY REPORT: Two PRCA officials, Cliff Overstreet and Larry Davis, were injured Wednesday night when they were pinned against the arena fence by a bull during the bull riding go-round.

Overstreet suffered bruises and abrasions on his left knee and thigh and Davis suffered a right ankle bruise when Copenhagen Mega Two, ridden by Phillip Elkins, got up against the steel fence after coming out of the chute.
