Helping Hands will host Tuesday event

A health fair sponsored by the James Seastrand Helping Hands of North Las Vegas and the Guadalupe Medical Center will be held 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Tuesday at 1820 E. Lake Mead Blvd.

Standard physicals that include diabetes screenings and blood pressure checks will be provided.

In addition, 2,000 food baskets and 1,500 toys will be given away, and Santa Claus will be on hand for photos with children. For more information, call 649-7853.

Senior center plans lecture by dietician

A holiday nutrition lecture is being sponsored at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the West Flamingo Senior Center, 6225 W. Flamingo Road.

Leslie Dierson, a registered dietician and certified diabetes educator, will discuss healthy eating habits for the upcoming holiday season. Cost is $3, which includes a light dinner. The registration deadline is Saturday. Call 455-7742.

Henderson schedules series of workshops

Workshops geared toward fly-fishing will be held 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday and Dec. 14, and Jan. 9 and Jan. 11 at Henderson's Black Mountain Recreation Center, 599 Greenway Road.

The two-part workshops, entitled "Tying Buggers, Catching Fish," is open to novice and experienced fly-fishermen ages 13 or more.

Participation in either workshop is $49 per person, which includes equipment, materials and a tool kit. For additional information, call 565-2880.

Madrigal Singers to perform Tuesday

The Nevada Arts Advocates quarterly Arts Awareness Luncheon will be held at noon Tuesday at the Stardust hotel.

The holiday season will be ushered in by the Green Valley High School Madrigal Singers dressed in traditional period costumes.

Paul Hesselink, dean of the Nevada School of the Arts, will be a featured speaker. The public is invited, and the lunch costs $27 for a paid reservation by Friday. At the door the cost is $30.

Golf fund-raiser

The Birdie for Safe Nest is hosting a fund-raising golf tournament 7:30 a.m. Monday at the Stallion Mountain Country Club, 5500 E. Flamingo Road, to help end domestic violence. Entry is $150 per player or $500 for a foursome. Contact Safe Nest at 877-0133, Ext. 238.

Lecture: Gang culture

Southern Nevada Adult Mental Health Services is offering a free lecture, "Understanding Gangs and Gang Cultures," 6-7 p.m. Tuesday at the West Charleston Library, 6301 W. Charleston Blvd. David "Hotdog" Holis of Nevada Youth Patrol will speak. For more information, call 486-6223.

Toy drive

EOB Health Services, Caminar and RUSH are sponsoring a toy drive for the children of EOB Reach Out Learning Center 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday in the Vons shopping center at J Street and Owens Avenue. The center was founded by parents of HIV infected and affected children. Call 647-2900.
