Sport: Football
Currently: Hartwell, a 6-2, 254-pound linebacker, received the 2000 Buck Buchanan Award, given annually to the top defensive player in Division I-AA. Hartwell led all I-AA players with 169 tackles in 11 games this season and finished his three-year career with the Leathernecks with 512 tackles, a school record. Hartwell earned All-American honors last season, and was the Gateway Conference Defensive Player of the Year in 1999 and 2000.
Looking back: A three-year starting linebacker for the Desert Shields, Hartwell still holds the Cheyenne school record for career tackles. As a senior, he also served as a quarterback for the Shields, earning all-conference honors on defense. After spending one year at Wisconsin, Hartwell transferred to Western Illinois.
