The Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area has several educational hikes and other programs scheduled over the next week.
The events are free, but reservations are required. Call 363-1922. All events begin at the visitor's center.
Some coming programs:
Keystone thrust: This 2-mile moderate hike will "time travel" back to the age of continent-building, plate shifting, and thrust faulting. Find out about what these weird terms mean on Saturday. Ages 15 to adult are welcome.
Strange history of Wilson Canyon: Volunteer "Cactus" Jack believes Indians shunned it, early Las Vegans partied there and exotic plants were said to flourish there ... but they can't be found. Find more mysteries on this 4-mile moderate hike Saturday on the Arnight trail. Meet at the Pine Creek parking lot.
Beginning photography:- Explore techniques you can use to take better photographs, then head for a beautiful canyon to put the new techniques to use on this hike Sunday that will cover 2 miles round trip over rocky desert terrain. Twelve-year-olds to adults are welcome.
