Letter: Course of our future at stake

Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000 | 10:05 a.m.

(1) The selection of the Cabinet and the thousands of patronage jobs. They will be the ones who administer and implement the policies of the president.

(2) The ability of the president to execute and enforce his own interpretation of what he sees is good for the country through "executive orders."

(3) The appointment of probably four Supreme Court justices during his four-year term. This can establish a liberal- or conservative-based court. The effects of their decisions can affect the course of the country's law (e.g., the Warren Court).

Should George W. prevail, those who will benefit will be the rich and famous, the religious right, the petroleum industry, the pharmaceutical companies, the NRA and its puppets, the gun owners. Should Al Gore prevail, the beneficiaries will be the common people, the oppressed and the middle class.
