Inc. magazine named Las Vegas as the No. 1 small metro area "to start and grow a company" in its Dec. 1 edition.
Inc. cited Las Vegas' low-tax environment and tourism market of more than 33 million a year as the city's advantage. The Inc. list ranked Reno No. 4, citing the city's low tax structure, "outdoors lifestyle" and ease of transportation.
The Inc. study was based on a report by Massachusetts-based Cognetics Inc. Cities are ranked by Cognetics based on "significant starts" -- the number of businesses started in the last 10 years that employ at least five people today, as a percentage of all businesses -- and "young growers," defined as companies less than four years old that have experienced rapid growth.
Las Vegas has been ranked at the top of Cognetics' small metro list for the past six years. Reno moved up from No. 7 in 1999.
