Perkins: Gorman’s ‘Mr. Everything’

Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000 | 9:44 a.m.

A look at Dyante Perkins:

School: Bishop Gorman

Position: QB/LB/DB

Year: Senior

Height: 6-1

Weight: 220

Notes: Despite battling injuries, rushed for team-high 757 yards and seven touchdowns on 141 carries in 1999; completed 44-of-102 passes for 718 yards and eight TDs; averaged 39.9 yards as Gaels' starting punter; honorable mention Sun All-State selection; honorable mention All-Sunset pick

Said Gaels coach Roger Whalen: "He's a tough guy to bring down. I don't think I've ever seen one guy bring him down. And he's got a fine arm -- it's something he's worked hard at. There have been days this spring and summer where he couldn't throw anymore because he'd thrown so many passes."

It's hardly uncommon for high school football players to play one position on offense, another on defense and even a third on special teams.

But during his four-year varsity career, Bishop Gorman's Dyante Perkins has given new meaning to the word "versatility."

The Gaels' starting punter as a freshman, the athletic Perkins took on far greater responsibilities as a sophomore, starting at running back and linebacker, adding kicking duties and continuing as the squad's punter.

Last year, Perkins took on still new roles, those of starting quarterback on offense and cornerback and safety on defense. He also managed to rotate into the squad's crowded backfield as a tailback, play some linebacker and punt to the tune of 39.9 yards-per-game.

Now, as he prepares for his final prep season, Perkins' versatility has schools like Oregon State, Arizona State, USC, Wisconsin and UNLV lining up to offer him scholarships.

It also has the senior poised for a breakout season after battling a dislocated kneecap a year ago.

"Offensively, he presents a real threat every week that people have to design a game plan around." Gorman coach Roger Whalen said. "And on defense, we may move him around during games, depending on the down and distance."

At 6-1, 220 pounds, Perkins certainly presents a physical challenge from his quarterback position in the Gaels' option attack. Add in his deceptive speed, his strong throwing arm and his improving decision making, and opposing defenses are looking at one tough customer.

"Last year was more of a learning experience for me (at quarterback)," Perkins said. "Now, I've had all spring to work on my steps and learn the plays."

Perkins will also be operating behind a more experienced offensive line, and like any smart quarterback, he's ready to credit his blockers for any success he has this season.

"Last year, I ran the ball most times we called a passing play," Perkins said. "This year, I trust my offensive line, so I should have a lot more time to throw. Our line wants to prove something this year."

Though Perkins' exploits on offense will likely grab more headlines, most colleges are looking at him on the other side of the ball, primarily as an outside linebacker or safety.

That's just fine with Perkins, whose defensive abilities also proved key last winter for Gorman's 4A state basketball title team. Now, he and senior running back Jason Rogers -- another member of that basketball squad -- will try to experience championship success with a second set of teammates.

"We showed them our (title) rings, and I told the team that I want them to feel what I did when we won in basketball," Perkins said. "If we could win state in football and basketball this year, it would be so amazing."
