Letter: Parents who are divorcing must face reality
Thursday, Aug. 31, 2000 | 9:36 a.m.
The system is designed to have "winners and losers." One parent is ordered to pay another while the other is "awarded" custody.
The other parent is then ordered to be a "visitor." Although Nevada has a law that mandates shared parenting, it is rarely implemented properly.
Family Court judges also routinely "award" legal fees to litigants, forcing them to pay opposing counsel's fees. Again, creating a "winner and a loser."
Children need both parents except in extreme cases where it has been proven with clear and convincing evidence that such a relationship would be harmful to the child.
Also, it is a proven fact that parents who share parenting support their children directly, as needed.
Divorcing parents must face the fact that when they choose to divorce, bills more than double for each spouse.
It is unreasonable to expect one parent to carry another for 18 years. It just doesn't work in reality.
