UNLV senior forward Kaspars Kambala has been announced as a preseason top 50 candidate for 2000-01 Wooden Award All-American honors. The list of candidates was released by the John R. Wooden Award Committee Monday.
Kambala, who was among the top 25 vote-getters, led the Rebels in scoring (18.5 ppg) and rebounding (9.3 rpg) last season. The team won the inaugural Mountain West Conference title with a 23-8 mark and made the NCAA Tournament.
The 10-player Wooden Award All-American team will be announced March 27. One member of that team will be selected on April 6 as the recipient of the Wooden Award as the nation's "Most Outstanding Collegiate Basketball Player of the Year."
The top 50 candidates were selected based on last year's individual performance and team records.
In late December, the Wooden Award committee will release the midseason top 30 during a half-hour program on FOX Sports Net.
