Internet selling program launched in Vegas

Home improvement retail giant Home Depot today launched its Internet selling program, www.homedepot.com. Las Vegas is the first city in the nation with the service.
Home Depot, which has six stores in Las Vegas all offering the Internet ordering service and is building a seventh local store, said it won't hire any additional staff for the e-commerce site. Home Depot has 1,100 employees in the Las Vegas area.
Las Vegas was chosen to test the service because of its moderate size, high-growth potential and isolated geographical location, which "makes it easy to see the impact of advertising," said Carol Schumacher, Home Depot's spokeswoman. "Six stores is a quite a number given Las Vegas' population size, and that gives us good penetration."
Products can be picked up by the customer at the store, delivered to a job site or other location by Home Depot within 24 hours if orders are received by 2 p.m. Or they can be shipped by UPS.
Home Depot plans to open a seventh Las Vegas-area store in December at 7881 West Tropical Parkway in northwestern Las Vegas and will hire some 150-200 workers there.
