Events center controversy unexpected news for developer

Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2000 | 10:12 a.m.

David Cordish said the out-of-town casinos and the ones in town shouldn't be bickering over the center because it's in all their best interests.

"If King Solomon observed Reno and its competition from California Indian gaming and listened to the debate, he would say, 'Are you guys nuts?"' Cordish said.

Despite the questions about the events center, Cordish remains confident that it will be built and that his plan - including retail-entertainment attractions to feed off business generated by the center and other downtown enterprises - will be implemented.

So is Reno Mayor Jeff Griffin.

"This is Reno - nothing is embraced with open arms," Griffin said. "I'm extremely confident that we will go forward."

Cordish said his downtown plan won't work without the events center as a cornerstone and there is no better "people-generator" for the money available.
