Immunizations

Health district immunization clinics are open each week in and around Las Vegas. Immunizations are provided without charge to children and young adults under the age of 21 in any of four public health centers and 15 satellite clinics. The Health District will be closed Sept. 4, in observance of Labor Day. The following clinics will be open this week, Aug. 30 through Sept. 5:

DISTRICT HEALTH CENTER: 625 Shadow Lane, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

HENDERSON PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER: 129 W. Lake Mead Drive, Building A, Suite 10, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

EAST LAS VEGAS PUBLIC HEALTH CENTER: 560 N. Nellis Blvd., Suite E12, 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

NORTH LAS VEGAS FAMILY HEALTH CENTER: 2225 Civic Center Drive, Suite 240C, 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

GREEN VALLEY CLINIC: Green Valley Library, 2797 N. Green Valley Parkway, 9 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m. Friday.

CHEYENNE I-3 CLINIC: Centers for Healthy Families, 3266 Las Vegas Blvd. North, 9 a.m.-noon Friday.

FREMONT MEDICAL CLINIC: 4880 S. Wynn Road, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday. Immunizations free to anyone who walks in.

RAINBOW LIBRARY: 3150 N. Buffalo Drive, 9:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 5.

CAMBRIDGE COMMUNITY OUTREACH CENTER CLINIC: 3827 S. Maryland Parkway, 9 a.m.-noon and 1-3 p.m. Sept. 5.

Donations sought for kids' blankets

A local organization that provides blankets to sick and traumatized children is seeking donations from the community.

Southern Nevada Chapter-Project Linus is seeking handmade quilts, afghans or fleece blankets. Washable yarn, fabric, batting thread, storage boxes and binding are also needed.

Since 1995 the chapter has donated more than 500 security blankets to Southern Nevada children.

Guinn proclamation cites firefighters

Gov. Kenny Guinn has issued a proclamation to honor the hundreds of firefighters and volunteers who continue to battle wildfires in the state.

Almost half a million acres have been charred. State agencies involved in the firefighting effort include the divisions of Forestry, Emergency Management, Wildlife, Agriculture and the National Guard.

Earlier this month Guinn extended the registration deadlines at the states universities and community colleges for students who were serving as volunteer firefighters.

UNLV student gains national recognition

UNLV student Joel Buford accepted membership in the National Society of Collegiate Scholars for his outstanding academic accomplishments.

Buford is a music education major who graduated from the Las Vegas Academy of Performing Arts with an honors diploma and a 4.45 GPA.

The National Society of Collegiate Scholars is a selective, national nonprofit honors organization that recognizes first and second year undergraduate students who excel academically. Buford will be honored this fall at UNLV.
