Price of living on Tahoe shores rises

Douglas County residents along the lake face some nasty news in their property taxes next year.
Assessor Barbara Byington said dramatic increases in land values over the past four or five years have led to a need to reassess all properties.
This will be done for the 2001-2002 tax year and will be reflected tax bill eleven months from now.
Byington said that in analyzing more than 20 lakefront sales in recent years, her office found values had at least doubled.
She said the sales are of vacant land or land where improvements are torn down for new structures. Also, there have been many sales of improved property with a similar pattern of market increase.
