Ceremony greets Millennium Scholars at UNR

Gov. Kenny Guinn and UNR President Joe Crowley greeted nearly 800 of the scholars during a special ceremony Saturday on the University Quadrangle.
The students are part of the first Millennium Scholar class. The statewide scholarship program was established last year by the Nevada Legislature and paid for by tobacco settlement money.
Guinn developed the program for renewable $10,000 scholarships as a way to encourage more students to enroll in the state's higher education system.
As the keynote speaker at Saturday's ceremony, Guinn praised the program as a major step in diversifying the state's economy.
He cited the lack of a better-educated workforce as the reason why more businesses don't relocate to Nevada.
