Blackout doesn’t stop the slots

Monday, Aug. 28, 2000 | 10:26 a.m.

While some homes and businesses were without electricity, emergency generators kept things going in the resorts.

A 14,000-volt circuit that feeds the gaming halls' electricity malfunctioned around 3 p.m. The downed circuit kept the casinos and a handful of Stateline residents with partial power for a more than two hours.

At Horizon Casino, engineering director Dennis Lamey said emergency backup generators provided essential power for things like elevators. And, of course, the casino.

An engineer at Harrah's Lake Tahoe said during the power loss, gas went out on kitchen stoves, lights dimmed and flickered and generators and batteries had to be used to maintain gaming operations.

Sierra Pacific Power Co. said some equipment blew up on Lake Village Drive. The problem was isolated before nightfall.
