Editorial: Flight delays lead to mounting anger
Last week Transportation Secretary Rodney Slater held a summit of all the key players in the travel industry to see how these problems might be solved. After the meeting Slater announced a few initiatives, such as improving the air traffic control system to eliminate some "choke points" that are responsible for many delays. But no one should expect immediate relief. The bottom line is that this problem has been brewing for a long time, but there has been no coordination among all involved to remedy the congestion. It could be years before real improvements are seen. Until then, prepare to ...

SPARTA, Ky. - A recharged Scott Goodyear boosted his Indy Racing League championship chances Saturday, narrowly winning the pole for the inaugural Belterra Resorts Indy 300 at Kentucky Speedway.
Editorial: Rejecting sure thing is big risk
Since then the case has been tied up in litigation. So after he was elected mayor last year, Goodman, a defense attorney, diligently sought to settle this matter by negotiating with the family himself. A tentative $4.5 million deal had been reached earlier this month, but the next day Harry Pappas backed out of it, saying he now wanted an extra $120,000 in compensation for the business the family lost from the condemnation. Goodman, who had been remarkably patient during the negotiations, finally had had enough. Last week he set a Thursday deadline for the family to either sign the ...

Letter: Nevadans back Neal's noble fight
The industry is fighting the 5 percent increase that he has proposed. This is to make it pay its fair share of the increased infrastructure burden that it causes. The same gaming companies pay far more taxes to other states than they pay to Nevada. The Nevada taxpayer is subsidizing the gaming companies, and they are using our dollars to expand elsewhere. Admittedly his 5 percent proposed increase is low; we now know that a 10 percent increase would be more equitable.

Where I Stand -- Grant Ashley: On serving the public
I am concerned by the results of several surveys of college students who rank a career in nonelected public service as a much less attractive profession than those previously surveyed. This trend emerged several years ago and must be reversed.
Letter: Speakers ignore rights of unborn
Using terms such as "a woman's right to choose" and "reproductive freedom," these prime-time speakers at the Staples Center in Los Angeles failed to address the magnitude of this controversial issue. Wouldn't it have been fair and just for the delegates to see an ultrasound picture of an unborn human baby to help them better choose, along with the American public, what rights must be available for these least ones? The veiled language and inconsistent pro-child sentiments didn't attend to the deeper issue of why in a free society we mistreat our littlest members, those being formed in their mothers' ...
Letter: Bush's tax cuts wouldn't benefit working class
The budget surplus should be used to pay down the national debt, which will also serve to put downward pressure on interest rates. This will assist the economy and those (mostly working middle class) with heavy debts. A huge tax cut will benefit those who already gained from the high spending and debt of the 1980s and will put upward pressure on interest rates.
Columnist Jeff German: Cassidy becoming liability to mayor
WILLIAM CASSIDY'S month-long suspension expires this Friday, but there has been speculation we may have seen the last of the California private detective at City Hall.
Chefs help needy students learn about nutrition
Not everybody associates Las Vegas -- land of all-you-can-eat buffets -- with healthy eating and high nutritional values. But when it comes to educating children, local chefs beg to differ.

Have the razor at the ready: Robin Williams will soon take on Liberace. Williams has signed a development deal to star in a movie based on the life of the flamboyant pianist, who passed away in 1987 at the age of 67.
