Silverman back in running for CCSN president’s position

Friday, Aug. 25, 2000 | 11:20 a.m.

Interim college president Robert Silverman is back in the running for a permanent post as leader of Community College of Southern Nevada.

In a special meeting held this morning, regents voted 4-1 to open the search to additional nominations after narrowing the pool to six finalists on Aug. 5. Regent Howard Rosenberg was the lone dissenting vote.

As expected, Silverman was the only nomination to surface. CCSN faculty, staff and students have been calling regents to request an interview for Silverman since he was cut from the pool.

Silverman has served as interim president of CCSN for seven months. Before that, he served more than four years as vice president of academic affairs during the presidency of Richard Moore.

Regent Tom Kirkpatrick has been the most vocal opponent of today's meeting.

In a letter sent earlier this week to Regent Douglas Seastrand, chairman of the search committee, Kirkpatrick complains that the unusual manuever of reinstating Silverman goes against bylaws of regents and impugns the integrity of the committee system.

Kirkpatrick substituted for Regent Steve Sisolak at the Aug. 5 vote.

But Sisolak and other regents pointed to the outcry from CCSN faculty and staff as ample justification to give Silverman a chance to interview.

Interviews with the six other candidates will be held the weeks of Sept. 18 and 25.
