Barbara Greenspun remembers 1957: Presidential pardon remembered

Friday, Aug. 25, 2000 | 9:01 a.m.

How well I remember the day Hank received a presidential pardon from President John Kennedy.

In the column of July 19, 1957, reprinted on this page, readers are reminded how deeply concerned Hank was that his conviction for supplying guns to the freedom fighters of Israel had cost him his right to vote.

President Kennedy issued a pardon in 1961, and who would you believe came to the office to register Hank to vote? It was Mike O'Callaghan, at the time a leader in the Democratic Party. And how did Hank register? As a Republican, which brought forth a volley of expletives from O'Callaghan.

Mike went on to become a two-term governor of Nevada and at the end of his final term, Hank convinced him to join the Sun as a senior executive.

Actually, the registration as a Republican had little meaning as the Sun publisher generally supported men and women of integrity without regard to party affiliation.
