Letter: ‘Sport hunting’ is an oxymoron
Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000 | 9:31 a.m.
The term "sport hunting" has always been an oxymoron -- baseball, football, basketball, etc., are sports. They require willing players on an even playing field, each side having an equal chance to win. Sports also require lots of hard work, preparation and skill.
Sneaking up on defenseless animals, then slaughtering them with a high-powered rifle and celebrating this "victory" with a cold beer, can hardly be considered a "sport." The majority would agree it is instead an outrageously cowardly act.
Perhaps the important consciousness awareness messages from the hard-working animal rights advocates are finally getting through -- or could it really be that at long last we are becoming a truly civilized society?
