Thursday, Aug. 24, 2000 | 10:44 a.m.
The Washoe County sheriff's office said Patton and Wanda Stokley, 39, of Reno, were diving off the shore of Sand Harbor Beach when Patton somehow damaged his equipment and hit his head on an outcropping of rocks.
The accident occurred Wednesday afternoon several yards from shore.
Patton was underwater for several minutes before his partner could bring him to the surface and call for help, deputies said.
Several bystanders, including a doctor, tried unsuccessfully to resuscitate him.
Patton was pronounced dead after being flown to Washoe Medical Center in Reno.
