BILOXI, Miss. -- The city council has overruled its planning commission and approved Grand Casino's proposal to erect a video sign across U.S. 90 from its competitor, Beau Rivage.

The council Tuesday gave Grand Casino approval to build a sign with video displays 4 feet from its property line on the highway. The casino's plans were for a sign 20 feet tall and 11 feet wide.

The Grand purchased the downtown property last year for a welcome center.

The vote in the city council was 4-3 with some councilmen saying the sign would be a traffic hazard at the busy intersection of U.S. 90 and Caillavet Street near the entrance to Interstate 110.

Others said similar signs for the Mississippi Coast Coliseum and other casinos had caused no major problems.

Grand is owned by Park Place Entertainment Corp. of Las Vegas. Beau Rivage is owned by Las Vegas-based MGM MIRAGE.
