New superintendent to see changes in board makeup
Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000 | 9:08 a.m.
Twenty candidates spanning four districts are competing for four-year terms on the Clark County School Board.
New Clark County Superintendent Carlos Garcia could face an equally new School Board, depending on the outcome of the election. The two top vote-getters in each district will go on to the general election.
Board President Mary Beth Scow and two other incumbents, Ruth Johnson and Shirley Barber, are seeking re-election.
Board member Lois Tarkanian decided to run for the County Commission instead of seeking re-election to the School Board.
A need for more state funding, a teacher shortage, the high school dropout rate, rapid growth, school safety, transportation issues and a proposal to break the district into smaller units are among the concerns the candidates say they want to address.
Here are the biographies of the School Board candidates listed by district and in alphabetical order:
District A
District B
District C
District E
Candidates Jim Dreitzler of District B, Donald Fondriasopolous of District C and Ken Kukada and David Meckley of District E did not respond to the Sun's candidate questionnaire.
