Gunmen rush into apartment

A Las Vegas man was in critical condition this morning at University Medical Center, and one of the three men accused of rushing into his apartment and shooting him was also in the hospital with a gunshot wound.

Three men knocked on the door of an apartment in the 3800 block of Swenson Street near Flamingo Road about 12:15 a.m. this morning, police said. A woman, who recognized two of the men, opened the door, and the men rushed by her into the apartment. Two of the men fired gunshots.

The male resident was shot in the chest. One of the suspects, Darren Posey, 33, was hit in the shoulder from shots fired by another suspect, Metro Police said.

The suspects ran from the apartment and later dropped Posey off on the side of the road at Flamingo Road and Audrie Street. Police were called to the area to help the wounded man and realized he was a suspect in the apartment shooting.

Posey, who was listed in fair condition in UMC this morning, was booked in absentia on attempted murder with a weapon, police said.

Anyone with information in this case is asked to call Metro's homicide unit at 229-3521 or Secret Witness at 385-5555.

Driver facing felony charges

Metro Police have recommended a 21-year-old Las Vegas man be charged with felony driving while intoxicated involving a death and other crimes in connection with a fatal accident in July.

Christopher Terry is accused of losing control of his pickup about 3 p.m. on July 14 on Flamingo Road at Erva Street and crashing into a car, killing the driver, 63-year-old Sherman Smith, police said.

Terry was westbound when he apparently tried to pass slower vehicles and lost control of the truck. The truck went into eastbound lanes and crashed into the car, police said.

Along with the DUI charge, Terry faces charges of felony reckless driving, driving on a suspended license, unregistered vehicle, fictitious license plate and no proof of insurance, police said.

Suspect surrenders after leaving state

A 32-year-old man was booked into the Clark County Detention Center over the weekend in connection with the shooting death of a 29-year-old man in his house.

Eric Alido surrendered to Metro Police Saturday at the urging of his family, police said.

Alido is charged with shooting Arnold Pastor Friday about 6:30 a.m. in a house in the 5300 block of Nellie Belle Street near Decatur Boulevard and Russell Road, police said.

Alido, who is related to Pastor by marriage, fled to California before police arrived at the house. The two men apparently were arguing before the shooting, police said.

Pastor's slaying is the 64th homicide this year in Metro's jurisdiction compared with 65 at the same time last year.

Police await cause of death

A woman found dead in a North Las Vegas house Sunday was identified this morning as 21-year-old Nohemi Arellano.

North Las Vegas Police are awaiting autopsy results to determine the cause of death.

Arellano was found dead in a house in the 1900 block of Hoover Street near East Lake Mead Boulevard and Las Vegas Boulevard North.

A man called police late Sunday night reporting he found his girlfriend dead, police said. They said there was no apparent cause of death.

Maddox named to replace Fondi

Bill Maddox, former U.S. attorney for Nevada, was named a District Court judge to succeed Mike Fondi of Carson City, who retired after 23 years on the bench.

The appointment of the 52-year-old Maddox was made by Gov. Kenny Guinn, who called him "one of our state's most dedicated and hard-working attorneys."

Maddox, a former Carson City district attorney, served as U.S. attorney with his offices in Las Vegas and is now in private practice, handling criminal defense work and civil cases. He's been a practicing attorney for 23 years and a Nevada resident for 40 years.

The state Judicial Selection Commission presented the governor with three nominees -- Maddox, District Attorney Noel Waters and James Shewan, who works for the Washoe County district attorney's office.

Maddox will serve in the First Judicial District, which covers Carson City and Storey counties.
