Judgeships swell to 11

Three new Family Court judgeships were approved by the 1999 Legislature and will be on the ballot this election year.
The judges elected to fill those positions will join eight others in presiding over such issues as divorces, child-custody cases and juvenile crimes.
Last year almost 28,000 cases involving family issues were filed, compared to 25,000 in 1995. The number of juvenile cases also increased in that five-year period from 7,500 to almost 8,000.
Fourteen candidates are vying for the three seats open in the newly created Department I, Department J and Department K. Here are the breakdowns:
