Editorial: No land is in sight at top of the world

Cynics have argued that the "greenhouse effect" is junk science. Well, there is some new evidence that might make the continued derision of the global warming theory look shrill: The New York Times reported Saturday that the North Pole is melting.
A recent tour boat reported that there was a one-mile stretch of water at the North Pole. Scientists believe that the last time there was this much water at the top of the world was 50 million years ago. (Yes, you read that right, 50 million years.) The spirited debate over whether the warming of the planet is caused by nature or by man-made pollution won't end with this revelation, but the "greenhouse effect" is sounding more and more plausible.
