Congressman pushing for black member of Gaming Commission

Monday, Aug. 21, 2000 | 11:57 a.m.

JACKSON, Miss. -- With two of three positions on the state Gaming Commission up for appointment next year, some lawmakers would like to see a black person appointed to one of those vacancies.

The Gaming Commission, responsible for regulating the state's $2.5 billion casino industry, currently has three commission members, all of them white.

Rep. Bennie Thompson, D-Miss., wants to make sure a black person is appointed. Parts of his 2nd District include Tunica and Washington counties, where casino gambling is legal.

"What I'm promoting is the inclusion in Mississippi public service of women and people of every color," said Thompson.
