May 8:Fire Destroys Roxie Motel
Story: A historic county landmark, the establishment formerly known as Roxie's and which operated wide open for 10 years as a house of prostitution, burned to the ground yesterday afternoon. A fire of undetermined origin started in the attic of the large one-story stucco building at about 1:45. The loss was estimated at about $150,000. No one was injured in the blazing inferno, which completely razed the building.
May 17: $6 Million Fremont Hotel Opens Doors Tomorrow
Story: Hotel Fremont, newest addition to the Las Vegas skyline, will have a gala opening tomorrow at 11 a.m., President Ed Levinson announced. The hotel operators thus will have succeeded in their aim: to open the $6 million, 15-story downtown establishment during Helldorado festivities.
The luxury hotel is ultra-modern in design. The Los Angeles architectural firm of McAllister and Wagener introduced many new features, such as the staggered window pattern in which no window is completely beneath another window. The building will literally sparkle inasmuch as the exterior is surfaced with clear quartz, which will reflect the sun and night lights. The hotel, which took two years to build, is expected to become the hub of the city.
Nov. 28: Youth Forum Opens Today
Story: Some 330 of Southern Nevada's young people will embark on an adventure in citizenship today -- the Las Vegas Sun's first annual Youth Forum. As seniors and juniors from the seven Clark County high schools prepared this morning to converge at the Royal Nevada hotel for panel discussions, arrangements were completed for resort hotel stars to shine at tomorrow's gala banquet, climaxing the Las Vegas Sun's spectacular two-day event. An hour's entertainment will be presented with Bill Willard as master of ceremonies for that portion of the program.
