Fryatt near top of leaderboard

All Edward Fryatt needed was a tee time.
The former UNLV standout and Chaparral High grad, who got into the PGA Championship as the third alternate, fired a bogey-free round of 3-under-par 69 during Thursday's opening round at Valhalla Golf Club, leaving him just three shots off the pace of co-leaders Tiger Woods and Scott Dunlap.
Another ex-Rebel followed Fryatt's blueprint for early success in Kentucky. Skip Kendall, who was the first alternate to join the field, shot an even-par round of 72 on Thursday. Las Vegas resident Bob May, who finished his first round today, also came in with a 72.
The highlight of Fryatt's day came on the par-4 No. 6 hole when his approach came up short and landed in a bunker. But he holed out from there for a birdie.
Fryatt was paired with veterans Hal Sutton and Bob Tway for today's rain-delayed second round.
