County beginning work on 37-acre park in northwest

Friday, Aug. 18, 2000 | 10:04 a.m.

Clark County officials broke ground for a 37-acre park for residents of the county's northwest Thursday.

Mountain Crest Park, at the corner of Lone Mountain Road and Durango Drive, will serve "the fastest-growing area in the fastest-growing section of the United States," said Glenn Trowbridge, director of the Clark County Parks and Recreation Department.

Trowbridge said the area is underserved by parks. The closest other large county park is heavily used Lone Mountain Park, about three miles away.

The focus of Mountain Crest Park will be on serving residents within two miles. Many of those residents were involved in design meetings for the park, Trowbridge said.

"It will be a real bonus in the neighborhood," he said.

When completed in early 2001, the park will include a children's play area, a central plaza, picnic areas, a neighborhood services building and volleyball, tennis and basketball courts.

The $8.2 million project is funded by park bonds and capital improvement funds.

Carroll Varner, president of the Northwest Citizens Association, said the park is needed. He said the park has been part of the area's master plan for development.

The county has lagged behind in establishing parks for the area, Varner said, and "now the county is trying to catch up."
