North Las Vegas briefs for August 17, 2000
Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000 | 10:35 a.m.
Negotiations set for 13.8 acres
North Las Vegas city staff will negotiate for six parcels totaling 13.8 acres for a future park at the corner of Craig Road and Coleman Street.
The City Council gave the go-ahead Wednesday for the parks department staff to negotiate with the property owners for the land, appraised at $590,000.
The negotiations are expected to be completed within 45 days.
Grant application receives approval
The City Council has approved a grant application to help fund production of a local television show and establish an Internet website designed to help reduce crime.
The federal grant for $810,000 focuses on the partnership with the North Las Vegas Chamber of Commerce, the city, the police department and the Clark County School District. The grant will provide funding for one part-time DARE police officer, Internet domain and website development, and funding for the "North Las Vegas Now!" television program.
Using television and the Internet as tools, a variety of youth-oriented crime prevention programs will be developed. Law enforcement officers will add their DARE curriculum -- designed to combat drug use -- to a website specifically designed to appeal to youth.
The council has appointed
Mayor Michael Montandon to the Nevada League of Cities for the 2000-2001 term, and Redevelopment Manager Kenny Young to the Southern Nevada Enterprise Community Technical Steering Committee.
The city has awarded
a $152,808 bid to NewTex Landscape for landscape service around the city. The firm will perform landscape services at City Hall, Civic Center Drive median islands and Lake Mead Boulevard median islands. There will also be landscaping done at fire stations and other areas. The contract is for one year.
