Firefighters make headway on Nevada fires

The 39,330-acre Twin Peaks fire was 95 percent contained early Wednesday, with full contained expected by 6 p.m.

The lightning-sparked blaze has been burning since Aug. 1 in the Clan Alpine Mountain Range 50 miles northeast of Fallon. Some 323 firefighters remained on the lines.

Another large fire, the O'Neil complex southwest of Jackpot, was 99 percent contained at 39,700 acres, and crews from that fire were being demobilized.

Meanwhile, the South Willow fire burning 60 miles southwest of Winnemucca more than doubled in size to 13,000 acres by early Wednesday. It was only 15 percent contained, with 226 firefighters working the blaze.

The Cherry fire has been burning 30 miles northwest of Ely for more than a month but was holding at 7,500 acres. It was 75 percent contained and was being monitored by 1 person.

Thirty miles northeast of Caliente the Parsnip fire was holding at about 2,100 acres while the Phillips Ranch fire 50 miles southeast of Ely was at 1,925 acres and 25 percent containment.

This year's fire season is being called the worst in the West in 50 years. So far in Nevada, 828 fires have burned 532,000 acres. Nationally, 66,123 fires have destroyed 4.8 million acres.
