Columnist Peter Benton: Holland’s No. 1 at Sun City

Last week the PGA Las Vegas Chapter, Southwest Section staged its 36-hole championship over the Highland Falls and Palm Valley layouts in Sun City Summerlin.

With rounds of 68-69--137, TPC Summerlin's Justin Holland won convincingly over Bob Ault (Casa Blanca), Eric Clark (unattached), Mike Starks (Eagle Crest) and Wes Weston (Shadow Creek), who all shared second place with 141s.

Life member Bill Farkas won the Senior Division with a 2-over-par 146. Ken Kruetz placed second at 149 and third at 150 was the venerable Mike Harper.

The two best-balls of threesome segment saw the trio of Mike Starks/Brian Anderson/Jim Neighbors prevail with a fine 136. Sharing second at 139 were the teams of Dan Hammell/Mike Messner/Chadd Kaiser and Dale Akridge/Pat Duty/Darrin Euler.

Mike Starks follows at 332. Rounding out the top five placings are Dale Akridge, 237; Ken Whitaker, 198; and Brian Anderson, 184.

Bill Farkas leads the Senior Division with 141 points. John Long follows with 112 and third at 97 is Mike Harper.

Whoever said that money goes to money certainly was accurate.

Young Massi, with a two-over 74, edged Alex Lyon, Brandon Temple, Kenny Lee and Jim Lobrovich, who tied for second in the boys 15-17 bracket with 77s.

Aaron Slonim's 71 captured the 13-14 division, followed by Brad Thompson at 76. Third place was shared by Herb Adams and Johnny Pinjuv at 77.

The girls 15-17 winner on a card countback was Sabrina Faber at 77. Dina Wallin also took second with a 77 while Emily De'Ath and Christine Herntzner were third with 78s.

Mike Stewart was the boys' 11-12 victor with an 81. Alex Scott placed second at 83 while Zachary Swarts and Matthew Nolasco tied for third with 86s.

Stephanie Bird's 40 (for nine holes) won the girls' 11-14 with Nicole McGirr second at 48 and Jennie Sanford third at 49.

Nicklaus' share of the $225,000 purse was $45,000.
