Inspectors foresee few problems in opening Aladdin

Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000 | 9:14 a.m.

"We learned a lot in The Venetian," said Ron Lynn, assistant director of the Clark County Building Department. "We're a lot more coordinated."

The $1.4 billion Aladdin megaresort is scheduled to open at 7 p.m. Thursday, with a 10:30 p.m. fireworks show highlighting the property's relatively low-key opening. It is the only megaresort that will open on the Las Vegas Strip this year.

Crews from the county's building and fire departments will work late to complete their safety testing, as well as to ensure that the work meets the county building code.

"There doesn't seem to be any major problems," Lynn said. "There's nothing unforeseen. It's going along fine although there's a very tight time line."

Lynn doesn't expect the Aladdin's 75,000-square-foot convention area to open Thursday. And several shops within Desert Passage, the 130-store retail mall next to the Aladdin, also may not be completed in time for full testing, he said.
