Wildlife a key element to Red Rock hiking
Monday, Aug. 14, 2000 | 2:03 a.m.
A close-up look at desert wildlife is offered during many of the hikes and other educational activities of the Red Rock Canyon National Conservation Area.
The events are free, but reservations must be made by calling 363-1922.
Two of the programs planned this week:
Exploring Behind Sandstone: Two-mile hike Saturday for 12-year-olds to adults to watch for wildlife and search for desert mysteries around the sandstone formations. There will be some rock scrambling and a little "off trail" travel. Long pants recommended, preventing pokes and scratches. Bring water and binoculars.
Behind Wheeler Camp Spring: In addition to being a bird sanctuary, historic Wheeler Camp Springs is adjacent to an interesting canyon that served as the former dump for the town of Blue Diamond. A two-mile hike early Saturday morning will skirt the historic trash on the way to this little visited area while watching for birds and wildlife.
