Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000 | 9:55 a.m.
Registration dates for Safekey, a school enrichment program alternative for working families, have been announced by the city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department.
Running concurrently with the Clark County School District calendar, the before- and after-school program is offered to elementary and junior high students attending public schools in Henderson.
"We're pleased that Safekey is now available at every public elementary school and junior high school campus in Henderson," said Linda Pearnle, a recreation coordinator.
"This includes 12 year-round schools, nine-month schools and five junior high and middle schools. In all, the program will serve more than 2,600 participants in the upcoming school year," Pearnle said.
Registration for the 2000-2001 school year will be taken from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Aug. 19, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug. 20, 7 a.m. to noon on Aug. 21, 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Aug. 23 and 7 a.m. to noon on Aug. 24 at the Silver Springs Recreation Center and the Lorna J. Kesterson Valley View Recreation Center.
Staff members from the city of Henderson Parks and Recreation Department and Clark County School District teachers facilitate the Safekey program. A sports specialist is also on staff. The combination of recreational and educational instruction provides a solid foundation for quality school support and leisure opportunities within the program.
Safekey program highlights and activities include: arts and crafts, sports, special programs, homework assistance, cooking instruction, quiet time activities and an after-school snack. Safekey also features a prize patrol designed to reinforce positive behavior among participants. Additional work on peer development is offered in conjunction with a local ceramics studio.
