Jan. 4: New Sheriff, D.A. Raid Roxie's, But Nobody There: Ladies of Easy Virtue Long Gone
Story: Roxie's pleasure palace on the Boulder highway was given a thorough inspection last night by Sheriff W.E. "Butch" Leypoldt and District Attorney George Dickerson, and found to be closed in compliance with an abatement order issued the house of prostitution last week. Leypoldt and Dickerson -- both serving their first day in office -- were accompanied by newsmen as they led a force of sheriff's deputies through the plush love mill at approximately 8 p.m. Scatterings of flimsy clothing and personal articles in dormitory rooms in the brothel indicated the establishment had been vacated hurriedly to comply with a joint edict by the new sheriff and district attorney that it cease business as of midnight Sunday.
Feb. 3: Commission Blocks All Gaming Licenses
Story: Nevada's gambling control agency decided informallly yesterday to go a step further than the State Legislature and call a halt to issuing any major gambling licenses for the next 90 days. Obviously angered -- and saying they were baffled by the legislature's unanimous approval of a partial moratorium -- the State Tax Commission deferred action on the lone major license application ready for consideration. That was the transfer of the Cal-Neva Lodge at Lake Tahoe to new owners.
Feb. 27: Sun Writer Target Of Assembly Wrath
Story: A minor explosion -- verbal -- rocked the assembly chamber yestday when Ed Reid, Sun staff writer, was charged with "vicious lying propaganda" for a story appearing Friday under his byline. The blast was leveled by William R. Byrne, Henderson Democrat, one of the Clark County delegation charged by Reid with using steamroller tactics in trying to water down the assembly gambling control bill. Byrne told the assembly that if there are any more such writings by Reid "or any other member of the press; I intend to move that the certain person be barred from the press section of the assembly, and I feel very confident that I shall have the full support of every member of this body in doing so."
May 7: Moulin Rouge Granted Gaming License
Story: Nevada's gambling control agency yesterday licensed 25 partners -- among them are former heavyweight champion Joe Louis -- in Las Vegas' latest luxury hotel, the Moulin Rouge. The State Tax Commission, however, barred two potential minor stockholders from the $2 million hotel and gambling layout on grounds they were "undesirable."
June 14: Flood Paralyzes Las Vegas
Story: A tidal wave of water from the mountains to the west swept down on Las Vegas last night after a violent thundershower of rain and hail, virtually isolating the city, flooding hundreds of homes and stores and causing an untold amount of property damage. It was termed by old-timers as the worst deluge to hit Las Vegas since 1923. All available police and sheriff's officers and auxiliaries were called out to assist in the movement of traffic and emergency vehicles as the city was literally cut in half by the flooding of both underpasses crossing the railroad tracks.
Nov. 8: Supreme Court Bans Segregation In Public Places
Story: The Supreme Court yesterday seemingly sounded the death knell for racial segregation in all places supported by public funds. In separate, unanimous actions the court affirmed a decision holding racial segregation illegal in public parks and playgrounds and ordered minorities admitted to public golf courses.
