Joe Delaney remembers 1955: Durante at the D.I.

Friday, Aug. 11, 2000 | 9:18 a.m.

Jimmy (The Great Schnozzola) Durante was one of the most beloved performers in Las Vegas history. Durante with Eddie Jackson and later with Sonny King was a major entertainment factor until 1974, when he suffered a stroke at age 83. Several years before, Durante had a hit album singing ballads like "Young At Heart" and "September Song" which were later part of the "Sleepless In Seattle" soundtrack. The Donn Arden Dancers were featured. Arden went on to produce and direct the Vegas versions of the Stardust "Lido de Paris." His final effort, "Jubilee," continues at Bally's. Carlton Hayes led the Desert Inn showroom orchestra into the early 1980s.
