Twenty-five Nevada students have received $1,000 scholarships from a consortium of seven gaming-related companies as part of an educational effort to prevent underage gambling.
The students were winners of the Project 21 Nevada Poster, Essay and Video Scholarship Contest. They wrote articles and created posters and videos that address the issue of underage gambling.
Sponsors of the project are Harrah's Entertainment Inc., Primadonna Resorts Inc., Hotel San Remo of Las Vegas, Ameristar Casinos, Harveys Casino Resorts, New York-New York and International Game Technology.
Project 21 teaches casino employees, minors, parents and guardians about the consequences of gambling under the legal age. Since its inception, several casino companies and state regulatory bodies have adopted the program.
Beginning next year, the nonprofit Nevada Council on Problem Gambling will assume administration of the Project 21 Nevada scholarship program. However, Harrah's Entertainment, which began the project, will continue to play a leading role in the scholarship initiative.
