Letter: Bush support hard to figure

Thursday, Aug. 10, 2000 | 9:28 a.m.

For if they elect Bush, the country will be run by the Religious Right and the likes of Dick Armey, Trent Lott, Bob Barr, Dan Burton and Tom DeLay.

The reality is that laws are enacted and funds appropriated by Congress, not the president. Bush will make his appointments to the U.S. Supreme Court from a select list prepared by Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson.

Tightening of the gun laws will be a dream of the mothers of murdered children as Bush caves in to the National Rifle Association. Tax breaks for the rich will squander the surpluses now in the Treasury.

Sen. John McCain's dream of campaign finance reform will be buried as the Republicans gag him in the name of "party unity."

People need to wake up to the reality of a Bush presidency. The only hope we have to escape this nightmare is to actively support the candidacy of Al Gore.

The alternative is scary as hell.
