Las Vegas native Billy Harvey fired a 7-under-par 65 to post a four-shot lead after the opening day of the Nevada State Amateur Championship.
Harvey, a Bonanza High grad who will be a senior at Brigham Youngin the fall, registered seven birdies during his bogey-free round on the Snow Mountain course at the Las Vegas Paiute Resort.
Harvey's round broke the course record established a day earlier by Dallas Massey in a U.S. Amateur qualifier.
Behind Harvey are Massey and Michael Russell, who each carded 69s. Doug Pool shot 70 and Steve Sheehan turned in a 71 as just four golfers in the championship division broke par on the 7,146-yard course.
In the net division, Terry Henslee led the way with a 64 on the par-72, 6,631-yard Sun Mountain course. He holds the lead over Blane Midkiff (66), John Wright (68) and Larry Lang (70).
The tournament continues with 18-hole rounds today and Friday.
