Third annual fair planned on Saturday
The Women's Development Center and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development will host the third annual Home Buyer Fair 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday at the County Government Center, 500 S. Grand Central Parkway.
The fair will have information about down payment assistance programs, consumer credit, loans and mortgages. The focus of this year's fair is the first-time homebuyer -- especially in the Hispanic and black communities. For more information, call 388-6500.
IRS office can help on Monday
The Internal Revenue Service's Las Vegas office will host Problem Solving Day 1-8 p.m. Monday at 4750 W. Oakey Blvd.
Agents will be available to fix tax problems, such as payments posted to the wrong account or finding a missing refund check. Help in Spanish will be available. Appointments are recommended, but not necessary. Call 455-1287.
Children in need of school items
A Clothes For Kids booth will be set up at the Boulevard and Meadows malls every weekend in August to encourage people to buy back-to-school clothing for needy boys and girls.
Tags will be on display listing the clothing needs and sizes for each youngster, and the public will be encouraged to adopt the child of their choice and buy the clothes the child needs. Volunteers will be available for information.
Goodwill awarded
Goodwill of Southern Nevada, a not-for-profit organization, was recently awarded the Project Job Opportunities Benefiting Special Nevadans grant for $200,000 for the fiscal year beginning July 1. Project JOBS provides supported employment services to Las Vegas Valley residents with serious mental illness.
Luney to retire from dean's post
Percy R. Luney Jr. has announced his retirement as dean of the National Judicial College on the University of Nevada, Reno campus. Luney, who has held the position for two years, cited personal and professional reasons for his resignation effective in October. He said he plans to return to the academic community.
Scherer leaving marketing position
Kay Scherer, wife of Gov. Kenny Guinn's chief of staff, Scott Scherer, is leaving her job as marketing director at the Nevada Commission on Economic Development.
Scherer is going into the free-lance writing and consulting business. Commission Director Bob Shriver said Tuesday Scherer will be replaced by Jeanie L. Ashe, who has been manager of prospect development in the agency.
