Marsha Read started her career at the university in 1969 as an instructor and state extension specialist.
She will focus on recruiting and retaining graduate students and will set academic policy for all graduate-level education on campus.
Read has lived in Nevada since she was in the fifth grade. She grew up in the eastern part of the state and was graduated from White Pine High School in Ely. She earned bachelors and masters degrees in home economics at UNR and a doctorate in nutrition from Utah State University.
Read succeeds Ron Dillehay, who left the job in June to resume his post as director of the Sawyer Center for Justice Studies.
The university is continuing its search for a new dean for the graduate school. Ken Hunter plans to assume full-time teaching duties and research in microbiology and biology.
He will remain in his post as dean until his successor is in place.
