Letter: Keep politics out of education
Wednesday, Aug. 9, 2000 | 9:24 a.m.
One such effort is the development of a four-year state college for Nevada. It is our hope that this issue will be the subject of honest, open public debate where the people of our community can learn all of the facts, develop a comprehensive understanding and arrive at a well-informed opinion about the state college.
In recent weeks it has been disappointing to witness opponents of the college use smear techniques against highly qualified staff and sincere supporters in an apparent attempt to discredit the entire effort.
Nevada's youth must always be our top priority. I believe if we truly want to raise the caliber of education in our state, the best interests of our children must always take precedence over fear of competition, personality differences and political agendas.
The people who are sincerely interested in furthering higher education for Southern Nevadans are committed to fairly and thoroughly evaluating the merits of the Nevada State College and finding a way to bring high quality and affordable education opportunities to the dedicated students of our state.
