Higgins returns to Nevada to run Sierra Pacific, Nevada Power Co.

Sierra Pacific Resources, parent company of Nevada Power Co., Wednesday said its board of directors hired Walter M. Higgins as chairman, president and chief executive officer.

While on paper Sierra Pacific is based in Reno, Higgins' primary office location will be Las Vegas.

Higgins, 55, is returning to Sierra Pacific Resources, where he served from 1994 to 1998 as chairman of the board, president and chief executive officer.

Since January 1998, he has served as chairman and chief executive officer of AGL Resources Inc. in Atlanta. AGL Resources is the holding company of Atlanta Gas Light, one of the nation's largest natural gas distribution companies.

At Sierra Pacific and Nevada Power, Higgins succeeds Michael Niggli, who resigned last month.
