Firefighters hold their own as new fires break out

Tuesday, Aug. 8, 2000 | 10:12 a.m.

The Trout fire, at nearly 900 acres, was more than half contained early Tuesday, said fire spokesman Dick Birger.

"This is still the priority fire in Nevada because of its location near that community," he said referring to the hamlet of two dozen homes in Trout Canyon, just south of Mount Charleston and bout 50 miles west of Las Vegas.

"We're still watching the weather," Birger said.

Lightning is the suspected cause of at least three new wildland fires that broke out late Monday around the state.

Those fires, burning near Winnemucca and Caliente, have burned about 2,200 acres combined.

Elsewhere, a complex of six fires burning in O'Neil Basin southwest of Jarbidge has burned 37,000 acres, some in the Jarbidge Wilderness area.

The Fireball fire northeast of Fernley was 90 percent contained early Tuesday at 7,000 acres, and firefighters hoped to have it totally surrounded later in the day.

East of Fallon, the Twin Peak fire, at 7,500 acres, was only 20 percent contained. Fallon Naval Air Station was lending assistance by providing an emergency medical technician and a two-person crew with a water truck from a Seabees construction battalion.

This year's fire season is being called the worst in the West in 50 years. So far in Nevada, 817 fires have burned 460,000 acres.
