The name of a North Las Vegas Police officer who shot a man accused of pointing a handgun at officers last week was released this morning.
Officer Randy Carter, 39, a nine-year veteran, shot Gary Harris, 30, in the right buttock about 1:20 a.m. Friday in the 800 block of West Lake Mead Boulevard near Martin Luther King Boulevard, according to North Las Vegas Police.
Harris is charged with pointing a handgun at Carter and other officers who heard shots being fired in the area and were investigating, police said.
Carter is on routine paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated. Metro Police are investigating the shooting because it occurred in their jurisdiction.
Carter was responding to back up another officer on a traffic stop in the 800 block of Hart Street in North Las Vegas when the shots were heard in the area. Harris and other officers encountered a group of men running between some buildings, police said.
When the officers confronted the men, police said, Harris pulled a handgun and pointed it at the officers.
Harris was treated at University Medical Center for the gunshot wound and released into police custody. He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on charges of obstructing a police officer with a weapon and possession of a firearm by an ex-felon.
