Letter: Why wasn’t D.C. considered for nuke dumpsite?
Monday, Aug. 7, 2000 | 9:29 a.m.
After all, the party platform says nuclear power is "emission-free." I suppose the platform committee momentarily forgot the debate is over nuclear waste, not nuclear power. Besides, nuclear power is not emission-free; just ask the many country folk who once lived near Chernobyl, Ukraine, and who are now dying of cancer, not to mention the many long-dead Chernobyl victims.
And of course those Department of Energy scientists who "have not yet deemed" the Yucca Mountain dumpsite proposal as "safe" are only poor working slobs we need pay no mind.
OK. And all those government scientists who say smoking is bad for us are just hacks who need a cushy job.
I suggest the platform committee should have at least considered Washington, D.C., as an alternate dumpsite for the nation's nuclear waste. Maybe all those protons and neutrons will stimulate their thinking beyond the world of politics and money.
