Warm weather hurts earnings

Las Vegas-based Southwest Gas Corp. reported a loss of 31 cents per share for the second quarter of 2000. Analysts had projected losses would be 38 cents per share for the period.
The loss compares to the 12 cents-per-share loss reported for the same quarter a year ago. The loss for the period was $9.7 million on revenues of $197.6 million compared with a loss of $3.6 million on revenues of $200.3 million in the second quarter of 1999.
Company officials attributed the loss to high temperatures in the company's service areas in Arizona, Nevada and California. Temperatures were 25 percent above normal during the period.
